Hi,

My name is Vasilis Pappas.

I'm a fully registered Mathematics teacher based in Scotland, a professional pianist and composer, and someone who has always been fascinated by learning.

People often ask me which came first—music or mathematics.

The truth is that both have shaped who I am.

Physics first taught me to ask why. Mathematics taught me to think logically and appreciate elegant solutions. Music taught me creativity, patience and expression. Together, they have profoundly influenced the way I learn, teach and create.

Some people find it amusing that I'm a professional musician who teaches mathematics "in my spare time". I like to joke that I decompress from altered jazz chords (which are full of numbers) by diving into number theory... which, unsurprisingly, is also full of numbers.

Thankfully, my students seem to enjoy both sides of my personality.

Beyond the classroom

When I'm not teaching mathematics, you'll usually find me at the piano.

Over the years, I've written and recorded original music, exploring everything from jazz and funk to contemporary piano and orchestral compositions. Music has always been more than a hobby; it's another way of expressing ideas and emotions that words sometimes cannot.

Although mathematics and music appear to belong to different worlds, I have always found them remarkably similar. Both reward curiosity, creativity, discipline and attention to detail. Both remind us that there is often beauty hidden beneath complexity.

I don't know whether music makes me a better mathematics teacher.

But I do believe that both have helped me become a more thoughtful learner, and, hopefully, a better teacher.

Why this website exists

This website grew from a simple idea.

Over the years, I have written countless lesson notes, worked solutions, practice questions and musical projects. Rather than leaving them scattered across notebooks and hard drives, I wanted to create a place where they could continue helping others.
